There are some food things that make me say, “Yuck.”

Lunch meat that doesn’t come from the deli (don’t ask), canned vegetables (no explanation needed),  and recipes that call for condensed soup (I can’t stand the “glug” noise they make)…

And I have to add tartar sauce that comes in a jar.

Simply gross.

So, I have been making my homemade tartar (some version of it) ever since I met my husband and he has been bringing home some amazing walleye from Canada. If it was up to him we would fry it in a crap ton of oil and call it a day, but after one fish fry night I have to put my foot down or I am going to have to call myself Chubby Mommy ;) .

So, Cedar Plank Walleye and Homemade Tartar it is!

Here’s What You Need: (Enough for 4)
3 TBS of low-fat or olive oil mayo
Juice of 1/2 of a large lemon
1/2-1 tsp of fresh dill, chopped*
Seasoned salt*
Pepper
2 dill pickles, diced

Here’s What You Do:
Stir all the ingredients and then season to taste with herbs and lemon.
*If you don’ have fresh dill subtract that and the seasoned salt and replace with a bright seasoning like Country French Vinaigrette or Sunny Paris by Penzey’s.

To Cedar Plank a Fish*:
Soak the plank in water all day. I used a small dish to keep it submerged in the water. Heat the grill to medium-medium high. Lightly rub olive oil on the fish and season according to your taste. Shut the grill and cook for about ten minutes. Standby! Small fires have been known to start on our grill when my husband grills ours ;)
*I used a walleye, but any white fish will work. Of course adjust the time by the thickness of the fish.

See how the plank is all burned up?! Tastes good though!

 Kid Tip:
I know you might be thinking fish + kids-Really?! Well, my four year old actually likes fish because we play up fishing and how cool it is to eat fish. Try it-just may work at your house too! If not, you could always make some rice and stir in the fish with the old bait and switch technique ;) .

  1. i am definitely a tartar sauce kind of girl. My husband hates it but if I am having seafood of any kind that is fried or grilled I must have my tartar sauce- yours looks great

  2. Oh how awesome. I love tartar, and I love that I can now make it myself!! Thanks.

  3. I love homemade tartar and have been making it for years! For a little kick, I add in some finely diced pickled jalapeno! Yum!
We usually only eat tartar with fried fish, but I think I will try it with a cedar plank version next time.
    Thanks Bree!

I so agree- homemade tartar sauce is so much better and yours looks awesome!! So great your kid likes fish… I feel like I wasted so many years as a child NOT eating fish. Definitely making it up for it now though :)

  5. I agree with you, I don’t like lunch meat that is not from the deli either. This looks so creamy and delicious! Great recipe! :)

Loving this recipe. I love making my own tartar sauce–I never liked it until I started making my own (so I totally can relate with you). I’ve never used a cedar plank before great tips I can’t wait to give it a try!
